Now, I am going to show how to do Surface Modeling. In Surface modeling, we model by creating splines, position splines to form a "cage" of an object. Then, we cover this cage using "skin" or "surface". Usually this technique is used to create organic model.

You may think I will use Lofting to create this tubular metal. Wrong. I will use another technique, using spline. It's faster and simpler.

Ok as I have found in the last few days learning to do anything in Vray can be tricky due
to the lack of good beginner/advanced tutorials. That’s why I have been reading the Vray online manual for the last few days and trying to make myself accustomed to Irradiance mapping combined with a secondary bounce coefficient calculated with a QMC engine, precalcing the caustics to a photon map and all sorts of other mind boggling techniques...

The following tutorial assumes that the user has a basic knowledge of creating and using “VRayIES” and “Photometric” lights parameters.
While “Photometric” and “VRayIES” lights are used to load the IES web files, the following tutorial will focus mainly in customizing IES web files through the use of “Creator IES” software, as opposed to general photometric light functionalities.

In this series we’ll work on a complete project. Out main purpose is to obtain a realistic rendering of a modern desing chair and to do it we’ll start since modeling the chair using poly modeling discovering tips and simple way to do it. Then we’ll work at UVs solving some issue with default UVW modifiers and other stuff will be done in the UV Editor. We’ll take a look at some texturing too and then the model and the studio environment will be shaded with Mental ray Arch&Design materials trying to obtain a nice looking quality. Lighting will be done with simple setup and HDRI reflection/illumination. Rendering will be split in some layers to be rendered and tuned in Eyeon Fusion compositing software.

IES stands for Illuminating Engineering Society. IES standard file format was created for the electronic transfer of photometric data over the web. It has been widely used by many lighting manufacturers and is one of the industry standards in photometric data distribution. An IES file is basically the measurement of distribution of light (intensity) stored in ASCII format. You can think of it as a digital profile of a real world light. In 3d software like 3ds max it can be used for creating lights with shapes and physically accurate form.

Isometric View of Entire Scene
As you can see, in this particular scene, I pay little attention to objects that are not in view of the camera.
Note: The object acting as the floor is just a copy of the back wall. Also I placed a plane above the floor acting as the face of a billiards table. The plane is not in view of the camera but it is necessary for light bounces and color bleeding.

Hello, I tried to make this tutorial as simple as possible... How do you make a picture in real life when the light is too dark? Simple: you increase the exposure time, increase the ISO, and decrease the number of frames. With the Vray camera is pretty much the same thing.

Observe, Observe, Observe. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, become aware of how your surroundings or what you are viewing are lit and what kind of feeling or mood that lighting may create.
When it comes to lighting a 3D-scene, the light-setup can either make or break the scene’s believability and realism. Many artists lack the knowledge of lighting techniques. There are three concerns you have to consider during your lighting-setup: Is there enough light? Is the light source believable? And, how does the lighting affect the mood of the scene?

Caustics are really great light effects that you can observe in liquids, glass objects and gems. We are able to simulate this effect with 3D Studio Max perfectly. This tutorial about Caustics will work only if you enable "Mental Ray”! (This tutorial was made in Max 8).

This tutorial was created by the Florence Design Academy. On the F.D.A. gallery (http://www.florencedesignacademy.com/gallery_eng.html) you can see a few examples of designs of our students who have used this technique.
Since our students need a effective way to display their concepts and ideas, our teachers have developed many tutorials in order to give them an additional tool that every designer should have.

In this tutorial I will be talking mainly about how I made the weaved pattern (wattle) for the sides of the chair in the scene shown above. There were a few requests so I decided to write about it, I’ve tried to draw the general idea of how it was made, as a final render it might look complex, but breaking it apart you’ll find out that its mainly a repetitive pattern. So here it goes…

The following tutorial assumes that the user has a basic knowledge of 3ds Max when applying textures to the self-illumination toggle; applying the “UVW map” modifier and assigning material slots to objects/surfaces.
When using a bitmap in the “VrayLightMtl” or mental ray “Self Illumination (Glow)” toggle, the texture display is often overridden by its default colour swatch (i.e. white) in the viewport.

Inspiration
I designed this Room Based on one of Piet Mondrian’s Artworks in the 1920s called “Lozenge”, I’m a fan of his art and the way he uses straight simple Black lines to create his paintings, adding the three primary colors (red, Yellow & Blue) on a white background.
