Step 1: First of all, In Customize> Unit Setup change display unit scale to metric and select Centimeters so you can follow the tutorial exactly with dimensions.
Step 2: Create a box with these parameters Length=20cm, Width=15cm and Height=0.75cm
Step 3: Right click on your box and Convert to Editable poly. Select Edge and in Edit geometry panel select slice plane button to slice the box.
Rotate yellow rectangle (x : 90 ) in the viewport and move it and create 3 slices.
Step 4: Select Vertex in the Editable Poly and move the vertexes as show in this picture.
Step 5: Select all polygons in top of the box and bevel them like in the below picture.
Step 6: From Shapes panel, create 2 rectangles of Length=12, 11.8 and Width=13.5 , 13.3. Move both the rectangles as shown in the picture. Then select your calculator and in Compound objects select "shape merge" and click on pick shape , then select 2 rectangle to create a shape on the box and then delete those rectangles.
Step 7: Convert to editable poly (or editable mesh) and extrude polygons about -0.1cm. Select the polygon and extrude again about -0.05cm. And then select slice plane and create 2 slices and extrude that about -0.05 cm.
Step 8: Now I create the boxes of different shapes to create a calculator buttons. And give them different ID’s so we can easily change the material of the buttons. Scale down the top vertexes and also chamfer the edges so buttons have smooth look and don’t look edgy.
Step 9: Back to calculator body. We also need to smooth the corners.
Step 10: Now I want to make a LCD display for my calculator. For creating that I used everyone’s favourite Extrude and Shape Merge.
Step 11: Once again back on buttons of the calculator. We need to fix the number 5 button because little different from others. Make the changes in the button as shown below.
Step 13: My model is almost finished. Just need to create a cut in the bottom part of the calculator base. For this extrude the new polygons (-0.1) type : local normal. Then smooth the corner again by chamfer edge.
Step 14: For battery display near LCD screen use the same method of shape merge and extrude. Material It’s time to create materials for the calculator. Bring the material editor by pressing “M” and then Click on Standard and select Architectural and in Templates rollout select Plastic, in diffuse map click on none and select Dent. Change the parameters as following image and then go to parent change IOR to 1.2 and copy diffuse map to bump and change amount to 30. For label select white and yellow colors and for button select color similar to the calculator and for ON button choose the color of your choice. For battery material change Standard to Raytrace and select Gradient ramp for diffuse and change the settings as shown below. Hope you guys like my first attempt of writing tutorial.
